Abdominoplasty (Belly Surgical Sculpture)

Pregnancies, weight changes, any intra-abdominal surgeries, lack of exercise and sedentary lifestyle are the most frequent causes of deterioration of the appearance of the belly. Proper diet and exercise can improve the appearance of the abdomen, but when the lesions have created loosening of the skin, only plastic surgery can provide the solution.

  • What is abdominoplasty?

Abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure in which excess loose skin and fat from the lower 2/3 of the abdomen is removed and the abdominal muscles are tightened of.

Abdominoplasty reduces the size of the protruding belly and creates an aesthetic effect that improves the shape of the body. Abdominoplasty should not be considered a weight loss method. It should be applied in patients with good health and proper weight, but suffer from increased deposition of fat and sagging skin in the belly. If the female patient is about to get pregnant, the surgery should be done after the birth, because during surgery the abdominal muscles are tightened and during pregnancy they will loosen again.

  • What does indicate the need for abdominoplasty?

    The indications are:
    • "Hanging" belly, which means sagging skin
    • A belly protruding significantly from the rest of the body
    • Visible stretch marks below the navel.

  • What is the procedure before surgery?

At the meeting with the plastic surgeon and after deciding from where to remove fat and skin, the doctor will give you instructions as before all surgical procedures. You should stop smoking, start eating right, do not get specific drugs, such as aspirin or other anticoagulants, and do not get exposed to the sun before and after surgery. Besides the classical clinical tests maybe you will need a CT if necessary and if hernia existence of the abdominal wall is suspected.

  • How is the surgery performed?

Abdominoplasty is performed under general anesthesia. In order to remove fat and skin in the area underneath the navel, an incision is made low at a height that can be covered by underwear or bathing suit. The belly button is repositioned through an incision made in it and therefore is not visible. Muscles are tightened so they retain better the abdominal wall. If necessary, before closing the incisions, a little liposuction can be done in the lateral parts of the abdomen for a better aesthetic result. After removing excess fat and skin, the incisions are closed.

  • How long does the recovery last?

The patient remains in the hospital 1-2 days. The majority of patients get discharged the day after surgery. The sutures are absorbable, and there is no need to be removed. If there is pain after surgery you can treat it with standard painkillers. After the surgery a corset is usually placed which the patient should wear for 2-3 weeks. Depending on the nature of work and the temperament of the individual, patients return to their jobs a week after surgery.
