Otoplasty- ear surgery

The protruding ears or those whose lobes have some kind of deformity due to a genetic defect or injury can cause psychological trauma, insecurity and lack of confidence. For a child, it would be best the surgery to be planned by the parents before the child enters elementary to avoid psychological strain. Statistically, 5% of children are born worldwide, with protruding ears.
What is the procedure?
Otoplasty is a surgery that does not require hospitalization and is performed under local anesthesia. In children under 12, we recommend general anesthesia, because children do not cooperate easily. The goal is the surgeon to reshape the ear and bring it to the desired position. To achieve this and to correct the skeleton of the ear, the surgeon should intervene in the ear’s cartilage with special incisions and support it with stitches. The incisions are very small, behind the ear and heal quickly until they become invisible. What is the postoperative process?
After surgery, a gauze dressing is placed for about 3 days. Pain does not usually occur, but if it does, is treated with simple painkillers.
All you need to do is wear during sleep an elastic bandage for three weeks. The stitches will be removed 8-10 days after surgery. The first 2-3 months it is possible to feel a numbness in the ears which is something temporary. What is permanent and unchangeable is the aesthetic effect of the surgery.Sport activities that include contact are not allowed for 6 weeks, but the gym is allowed 15 days after surgery. Generally the patient returns to normal rhythms within 5-7 days.
