Rhinoplasty - Nose Surgery

The size and shape of our nose are keys to our facial appearance. Being one of the most dynamic and centrally positioned features well shaped nose can determine the beauty of a face.
As early as 600 BC an Indian surgeon reconstructed a nose using a bone part from the cheek and by 1000 AD rhinoplasty was well known as an Indian technique, using skin from the forehead.[1]

  • What is rhinoplasty?

Nose surgery or rhinoplasty is one of the oldest cosmetic procedures. With the evolution of technology and the passage of years, it is now classified as a routine procedure. The operation corrects congenital aesthetic problems or issues that arise after an accident and also improves the functioning of the respiratory system. Thanks to new technologies, you can reshape the nose, reduce its size, and eliminate the hump of the nose or thinning the edge.

  • What is the preoperative process?

In your visit to the clinic, the surgeon will examine the shape of your nose, exterior and interior. Then with the help of a computer simulation program, you can see how your nose will be after surgery. The doctor will also tell you that you should not take anticoagulants one week before and after surgery.

  • What methods do you use in nose surgery?

Two methods are used in rhinoplasty:
    1. Open Rhinoplasty
    2. Closed Rhinoplasty
Open rhinoplasty is used when the problem is extensive and complex or when there is need to treat problems resulting from an accident. Here, an incision is made at the bottom of the nose, the point situated between the two nostrils. The operation usually takes about 1.30-2 hours or more, depending on the extent of the problem.
With closed rhinoplasty we face simple problems, such as the hump of the nose or the recovery of akrorinio (tip of the nose). Here, the incisions are made inside the nostrils and the process takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes.

  • How long is the recovery and what you need to know?

Depending on the patient, the stay in the clinic can be for one night, otherwise is discharged a few hours after surgery. It is necessary to wear a special splint with plaster for about 5-7 days, to avoid any injuries. The sutures are absorbable and are not removed. After a week, the patient returns to normal rhythms. The result is immediately visible by removing the splint. However the end result is visible in three months, because the skin needs time to adjust perfectly to the new anatomy. You cannot wear glasses for about six weeks and will not be able to participate in sports for 8 weeks, especially when it comes to team sports and martial arts.
